JUG GAME

ANNUAL ‘JUG’ GAME HISTORY

The Brown Jug game started in 1960 as a symbol of the friendly rivalry between Garden City High School and Amboy High School. In 1969, with the consolidation of Vernon Center, Garden City, and Rapidan to form Wellcome Memorial and the consolidation of Amboy and Good Thunder, the Brown Jug game continued. In 1987, the Brown Jug continued to be the prize in the completion as Wellcome Memorial paired with Lake Crystal and Amboy-Good Thunder paired with Mapleton. Finally, in 1989, Maple River was formed as Mapleton-Amboy-Good Thunder consolidated with Minnesota Lake. Annually, this is one of the most heated rivalries in southern Minnesota.

When the series began, the team’s earmarked the first game of two annually to be the jug game. The location of the game from the 1989-90 season through the 1999-00 season was rotated between the two schools. After the 99-00 season, the school that currently had the jug would be able to host the game. Ultimately, this was changed back during the 2010-11 season as the Eagles and Knights only met once during the regular schedule. For the first time in Jug Game history, the game was hosted in Lake Crystal (The Knights formerly played all their games in Garden City before building a new school and gym in Lake Crystal). With LCWM ranked #9 in the latest AP Poll and sporting an unblemished record, the Eagles went into a full Lake Crystal gym on January 18, 2011, and came away victorious leading the game from opening tip-off through the buzzer.

The longest winning streak in the series is the first eight games of the series which were all won by Maple River. The Eagles have lost just 6 times in 32 games.
